Fishing Reports 5/27/16

* Please remember to call us for more up-to-date or detailed information! These reports are not meant to be your one and only, daily source of information. They are typically general, even seasonal type reports and we currently don't have a set schedule as to when we update. Please, just because we don't update as often as we like, it doesn't mean that we don't care.

There are many different approaches you should take in order to get a good game plan for a trip or a day of fishing. Also remember that things change and these reports are what we know at the time of posting only. Keep in mind that we do express opinions and personal preferences from time-to-time which may be different from yours or what you may read elsewhere. Thanks for checking and don't forget to call us if you need any further information or a more up-to-date report. 614-451-0363

Warmwater

Friends- we are looking for any and all reports on warm-water fishing here in the state or region. With the fantastic warmwater fisheries that we have here, it would be crazy not to add something here from time-to-time.

We obviously can't keep up with standard reports for all waterways so we are asking you folks to send us reports and pics! We would appreciate it and we know that are readers will as well.

Send pics and reports to admin@madriveroutfitters.com. If you include your address, we'll be sure to send you out one of the MRO "Fly Fish Ohio" stickers so you can show your Ohio pride.

We got a nice report this week from friend and customer Chris Schalz:

"Not a trout report, but the Olentangy fished well. These three came on consecutive casts. Solid fish. I'm 6'4" and each of these fish had a head the size of my fist. Have a good one!"

- Thanks Chris and no need to apologize. As you probably know, we love to fish for trout but we are not trout snobs around here. We love fish of all kinds and relish the diversity that Ohio has to offer the open-minded fly angler!!!

* Most streams in the Central Ohio region should be looking good for the Holiday weekend. A few still have some color to them but don't let that scare you. Some of our best smallmouth come out of dirty water each season. They still have to eat!

* Pike fishing has also been heating up the past week or so. It's always fair to good but the next few months should be fantastic. Here's guide Josh McQueen with the largest of the season so far. Stay tuned for more as Brian, Pat and Josh are headed out this weekend for a dry run on "Pike Camp" which you will be hearing about real soon. BTW- anybody interested in a pike trip with Josh or Pat please let us know. The jet boats are tuned up and ready to fish!

* Cottonwood Seeds have been falling the past few days! The un-official start of Carp season!!!! Things should really start heating up with them here also. Send us pics and reports if you get out and get some eaters!

* Seems that alot of Bass and Bluegill are still on beds but that should be changing here in the next week or so and they should be putting the feed bags on.

Mad River

The Mad is a bit on the low side. We could actually use a shot of rain here and hope that the predicted storms tomorrow come true.

That being said, the lower water is providing some good to excellent dry fly fishing. We have been blown away the past few weeks at the reports of bugs and rising fish that we are seeing and that folks are reporting. A fantastic dry fly season for a change.

On any given day right now you could see March Browns, Light Cahills, BWO types, tons of Caddis and of course Sulphers. The Sulphers are now running more the #16 variety and we did have some reports of the Dorothea #18 popping the past few evenings. Most of the bug activity will be in the evenings but you could see March Browns popping in the late afternoon. As we have been saying though...stick around until dark and have some Rusty Spinners with you! By far the most concentrated feeding activity of the day will be right before dark!!!

We are also on Brown Drake watch! Big time! No confirmed sightings yet but with this warm/hot weather we are experiencing, they should start any day now. For sure have some Brown Drake nymphs in the water during the day and watch for bugs. The tough thing about the Drakes is that you COULD see them at 10:00- 11:00 a.m. just as easily as you could from 8:00- 9:00 p.m.! Hard to tell with them but more likely closer to dark and again, be sure to have spinners. We often have Duns and Spinners feeding the fish at the same time and it's a sight to behold when it happens.

Our friend and customer Clay Sommerfelt sent us this report from Sunday:

" Friends, I fished all day yesterday on the Mad and it was only till the last 10 minutes that it turned on (for me at least). LONG, LONG, LONG day on the Mad yesterday (6:30 a.m.- 9:00 p.m.) I shuffled around quite a bit though and fished with some different people. Fish started rising around 8:30 p.m. and sulfurs seemed to be the hot ticket. 8 fish between family and friends, but nothing shark size"

Clay Sommerfelt on the Mad Sunday.

Also be aware that Birchbark canoe livery opens this weekend so be prepared for the "aluminum hatch" as well.

Just a reminder also that we are open normal hours tomorrow and will be closed on Monday to celebrate the Holiday.

Get out there and enjoy the weekend and let us know how you do!

Clearfork River

The Clearfork is a bit on the low and clear side, but just like the Mad, should provide for some good to excellent dry fly fishing this weekend. They have dropped the park water to super low levels which is surely in preparation for picknickers and swimmers down there this weekend. Probably better to think about the upper unless you are only planning on fishing early or late.

A super mixed bag of bugs here just like the Mad. A few March Browns still around, tons of Caddis and midges, smaller sulphers in the evenings and good numbers of Light Cahills showing up as well. Best activity will be in the evenings and most reports this week have been fish eating caddis pupa and dries in the late afternoons. A few folks did really well on Light Cahills close to dark. Be sure to have some Rusty Spinners of course as the spinner falls right at dark have been excellent and tons of fish up sipping them.

Could see Brown Drakes on the CF at any moment also so be prepared. A Drake Nymph is a good bet right now if you don't see fish rising. Better yet, fish the nymph with a green soft hackle behind it!

Just a reminder also that we are open normal hours tomorrow and will be closed on Monday to celebrate the Holiday.

Get out there and enjoy the weekend and let us know how you do!

Clear Creek

Clear Creek is also on the low side but has been fishing pretty well. Good reports from anglers throwing dries as well as nymphs. A pretty varied group of bugs but the focus seems to be on the caddis. March Browns and Sulphers have been around but not in huge numbers and the fish are definitely geared towards caddis and some on midges. Probably going to be a busy weekend down there in the park but don't let that stop you. Better than sitting on the couch!

Jimmy 31376 wrote us this week:

"Hope all is well. Fortunate enough to get in Clear Creek this morning before work got in the way. Saw a few rising including one who took an Elk Hair Caddis. He was roughly 11". Managed to get one other to hand who went about 8". Only bugs I saw were tiny and tan. They were everywhere. Makes me think I need to go home and tie up some tan gnats on #24's or maybe even 26's. Underneath the EHC I tried both green and tan midges but both fish in hand were hooked by the EHC. Three others got off without my consent. They were hooked in riffles and I don't know for sure if they ate the midge or the EHC. Thanks for all the help. I gotta get to your next entomology class!!! What is your guess about the tiny tan bugs? Andy idea what they were and how/if I should fish with an imitation of them? The only thing I could think of was a tan griffith's gnat."

MRO assistant manager Ryan Ratliff wrote back:

"Glad you got down that way. This is my home water and I know/love it well. There is a consistent midge hatch all year down there. Most of what I have been seeing are very small caddis in tan and grey. I would focus on using a size 18-20 Elk Hair Caddis. Griffith's Gnats are also a great cross over pattern. Below the surface swinging soft hackles can also be fantastic. We will keep everyone updated but keep your eye on the water temps. Once things get to 70 degrees and low flows I will typically stop fishing until Fall. The fish just can't recover with the lack of oxygen. Feel free to call with other questions as usual anytime"

Erie Steelhead

Lake Erie smallmouth fishing is going strong and should continue for a few weeks here. We do have guides out tomorrow so hopefully some pics and reports.

The water in the region is a bit on the low side, but that usually doesn't bother the smallies as much as it does the steelhead. Just might need to be a bit more stealthy and maybe switch to smaller streamer patterns.

Should be a great weekend for smallmouth fishing around the state but of course we LOVE the Erie tribs when the lake fish are in!

Send a report and photo....get a sticker. Make sure to include your address to send to.

Check back tomorrow afternoon for an update.

Mad River

5/22/16 Weekend Update- The rain didn't quite do what we thought. Not necessarily going to be the streamer water we hoped but the dry fly fishing today and tonight should be fantastic.

Not many reports from yesterday but we did have folks out on Friday and Friday night who reported in with great reports. It seems that we are experiencing an above average dry fly season here. At times WAY above average. This of course in addition to the staple nymph fishing and the world class streamer fishing. Great to be a trout angler in Ohio these days and hope that everyone is sending in the survey forms so that the ODNR can manage the river for even better fishing!

Here's a report from good friend and customer Jon Horn:

"Had a great evening of sulphurs last night in the rain (also mixed cahills, bwos, march browns, and a smattering of caddis (don't know what type... probably spotted sedges) and midges).  3 hours of solid bugs, fish up all over the river (anywhere there was cobble).  Didn't score much on size, just numbers.   All bugs seemed to be the sz 16 types green/tan.  Late in the hatch, they seemed to want more cripples and low-riding patterns.

Should be a great spinner fall today or tomorrow!

Hope you all are well!!!!"

**Tonight, as long as the sun shines and it gets warm, the Sulphers and bugs will be concentrated in the evening, with the spinner fall right before dark. On overcast and rainy days, just like Jon, you can see the Sulphers hatch all afternoon. Some of our best Sulpher fishing has been on cooler, overcast and rainy days!!!!

There has also been alot of questions about the Sulphers that we have on the river. The 1st is the Ephemerella Invaria which comes in at a size 14-16 and has a more greenish/tan body. As the hatch/month progresses this bug will become a bit more yellow. The second Sulpher, which we haven't seen any YET, is the Ephemerella Dorothea which comes in at a size 16 and will be more like 18 as we get into June. It is the more traditional bright yellow/orange bug. We could see these, especially in the upper river until mid to late June. Also need to mention spinner falls. Doesn't seem that many anglers are focusing on them but they should be! The spinner falls are the most concentrated activity of the day and are most often right at dark. All you need is some #12-16 Rusty Spinner patterns and wait for the show. Look for sippers!!!!

5/20/16- The Mad is in fine shape as we speak. Problem is, it's supposed to start raining here this evening and they are calling for 1/2 inch to an inch of rain before it's finished. Hard to say what the weekend will bring.

We'll post a few submissions here today and then check in with an update at some time during the day tomorrow to let you know how things are looking.

Levi King from last Saturday:

" Guys, found a couple good ones on the Mad on Saturday. River had great streamer conditions (flow, stain, rainy, overcast). I started throwing bigger articulated stuff and kept etting short/timid strikes. I knew the stretch had some good fish, so I walked back up and switched gears. I put on a smaller single and fished back down through a couple of good spots. The pics are one of the one that was around 20" and the other two the same fish. She was a thick female pushing 24". I called it a day after landing her. Tight lines. Levi"

Thanks for the pics Levi! A 20" and a 24" make for a GREAT day of fishing no matter where you are!

Derek Dewald from Tuesday:

"Hey Guys- I made it to the Mad yesterday evening and experienced some great dry fly action. Lots of caddis, a few Cahills and some others I couldn't identify. Landed 6 on dries, a couple on nymphs and lost/missed many more. It's a great time to be on the river! Tight Lines. Derek"

You are right Derek....great time to be on the water. A great dry fly season we are having!!!

Clearfork River

5/21/16 Weekend Update- Rain didn't affect the river at all. Should be good to go and did hear this morning of some good dry fly fishing on both stretches last night. Alot of folks headed that way yesterday and today so we will be looking for some reports and pics. Stay tuned!!!!

5/20/16- Not many reports from the Clearfork this week but we can tell you that both stretches fished pretty well for the folks that did chime in. Dry fly fishing has been good to excellent.

Tons of caddis, some March Browns, a few Sulphers in the evenings and even some Light Cahills reported already. The Cahills should stay pretty strong for about a month or so and will be found on both stretches of water.

The Upper is in good dry fly shape and the lower has been dropped and is even a bit on the low side.

We should be getting some reports here in the next few days as we have had no less than 10 phone calls today of folks heading that way.

We'll keep our eyes on the weather and try to do an update on the water conditions tomorrow once we see how this rain is going to shake out.

Clear Creek

5/21/16 Weekend Update- A bit more rain down South than here in the middle of the State and Clear Creek did come up pretty good yesterday and overnight. Probably won't fish until mid to late afternoon tomorrow. A brave soul might throw a big streamer around and see what happens but the park will probably be pretty void of anglers today.

We'll let you know as things change and of course feel free to call the shop if we don't get to it right away.

5/20/16- Clear Creek is looking good for the weekend but again, we are going to get hit with some pretty significant rain overnight and into tomorrow so hard to predict at the moment. We'll do an update tomorrow once we get a feel for how things will look for Sunday and into the 1st of the week. In the meantime, regular reporter Elliot Cantwell checked-in on Wednesday-

"Small caddis and sporadic sulphers in the evenings. Caddis are the the predominant hatch and the majority of the rising fish have been focused on them. No stellar mayfly hatch seen yet. Nymphing was the most productive: caddis, hare's ears and pheasant tail nymphs. Wednesday night resulted in this beauty. I was quite pleased I have to say. This creek holds a few secrets. Elliot"

Erie Steelhead

5/21/16 Weekend Update- Nothing really changed since Friday. The Rocky and Chagrin bumped up a pinch but nothing noticeable. The V and the Grand are both getting low but we did have folks on both of them yesterday and they did extremely well. As we have been saying.....Smallmouth Season is ON!

Get out there and get your Bronze On.

Our hero, young Ethan Hall and his Dad Steve were giving us a play-by-play yesterday as they went along....

Ethan Hall + Sage ONE 6wt + SA Sonic Titan Clear Tip = Deadly

We didn't even think that he let you fish Steve. Just thought you were his "Sage" caddy and personal photographer.

5/20/16- The tribs are looking good and filling up with fiesty bronze fish as we speak. Hard to say what the weekend will bring with the rains predicted though. If we had to guess, things will blow out tonight. If you are heading up this weekend probably want to take a look at the Grand. Even with some rain it will probably fish whereas the other tribs will quite possibly blow out.

We did have some guide trips this week and have a few guides out tomorrow. We'll try to catch up and get some photos posted. Just didn't get to it this week....we have been crazy busy.

Fishing season is busting wide open all over the place and keeping us hopping...which we appreciate.

We'll check in with an update tomorrow and let you know what the rain does. In the meantime, any photos of smallies from the past week or so send them along to be posted here and we'll send you out one of the "Fly Fish Ohio" stickers.

Send a report and photo....get a sticker. Make sure to include your address to send to.

Check back tomorrow afternoon for an update.

Mad River

The Mad is a bit high and cloudy today but should be coming into great shape for weekend fishing. The upper river could be good to excellent dry fly fishing and the lower river prime for streamers.

The Big news this week is that we have seen Sulphers in very good numbers and fish responding to say the least. This is the early, #14-16 ephemerella invaria which at this time of year is almost a greenish color. Actually a Blue Winged Olive pattern in #14 or 16 works better than a traditional Sulpher. We probably won't see the #16-18 dorothea for another week or so but you never know.....especially this year. Please keep in mind that these bugs hatch almost exclusively in the evening, like 8 p.m. on. We have seen a few in the afternoons this week but with the temps we are getting it will pretty much be an evening hatch from here on out. Also keep in mind that if you get a cooler, overcast day, you can see them hatch all day! Look for the spinners in the evenings as well mixed in with the hatch.

(Did also get a few reports of some straggling Hendricksons in the upper river but they are most likely on the wane.)

Caddis have been strong and prolific in the late afternoons and also some good reports of strong March Brown hatches in the late afternoons. These could be strong here for 2-3 weeks right along with the Sulphers. Also a few reports of Light Cahills showing up as well. Great time of year to be a dry fly fisherman!!!

Pick your technique this weekend and go for it. If nymph fishing, have some #16 Pheasant Tails for the Sulphers, Swink's Clinger Nymph for the March Browns and Cahills #14-16 Green Caddis Larva and for sure have some Brown Drake Nymphs which will be a HOT ticket during May in anticipation of this monster hatch in early June.

Regular and friend Don Gregory on a float trip yesterday with Pat Kelly. Could be a great weekend for streamer fishing in the lower river!

Reports from this week:

Jeff Kreager from Monday:

"FYI,  Last night's hatch was pretty awesome.  Photo included."

Mike Letizia also from Monday:

"Light Sulphur hatch and a few Cahills yesterday midday at Rt 36. Also some14- 16 ovipositors. Low and clear, got a few on small mayfly emergers and duns."

Daniel Church from Sunday:

"Went out today for a couple hours in the later afternoon. Got really surprised by this catch! Upper river, Elk Hair Caddis."

A bunch of rainbows have been caught recently. They love dry flies!

Jerry Rodgers from Thursday:

"Fished north and south of Pimtown Rd this morn.(9 AM- 2 Pm)...Still Hendricksons about also some lighter pale yellow mayflies -n- seen a couple larger brown mayflies......The trout were very cooperative and really liked  a 14 Adams variation that I tie caught 5 and missed 3.... Largest was a fat 14" the rest were between 9" -12"."

Thanks as always friends for the reports. We are now approaching 1,000 people per day that are reading this Blog and we all appreciate the feedback. Keep the reports and pics coming!!!!!

Clearfork River

The Upper Clearfork is a bit high and off color right now but should be coming down to very fishable levels for the weekend. It is prime streamer water today and should be tomorrow as well. As the weekend rolls on we should be looking at good nymphing and possibly excellent dry fly fishing.

Should be a mixed bag of bugs. Although we have not made eye contact with any Sulphers yet, they should be on the water at any moment. Same with March Browns. We have heard of a ton of caddis in the late afternoons and evenings. Don't leave home without caddis both dry and wet. #14-16 Green Soft Hackles are also a must to imitate the pupa which the fish have been feeding on.

The lower stretch is a bit up but fishable as we speak. As of right now we would predict that they would keep it at a fishable level but hard to guarantee. We'll watch it over the weekend and do an update if things change. The anglers we have spoken to this week that have fished down there were doing very well on dries and smaller nymphs. Should also be a mixed bag of Caddis, Sulphers, March Browns and may start to see a few Cahills as well. Late afternoons and evenings will be best and don't be afraid to stay until dark and hunt for spinners!

Sean Clancy from Indiana sent us this report this week:

"We went down to the Clear Fork for the first time ever. The water clarity was fair, water temp was 55 degrees and air temp 67 degrees. Appears wadeable to us Clear Fork rookies. We saw caddis and possibly sulphers in the air. No evidence of feeding or insect acction on the surface for the 4 hours fished. Had many short strikes and rolls on streamers. I caught a small brown on a Green Nosed Dace...no picture with the prompt release. Other popular streamers for the fish to swing and miss on were Dirty Hippies and Mini Double Bunnies. Was had a great day trout fishing Ohio. Thanks!"

Thanks for the report Sean. Your MRO "Fly Fish Ohio" sticker is on the way!

Thanks as always friends for the reports. We are now approaching 1,000 people per day that are reading this Blog and we all appreciate the feedback. Keep the reports and pics coming!!!!!

Clear Creek

Clear Creek did come up with some of the storms that moved through last night. It is pretty dirty right now. It  may fish tomorrow but probably safer to bet on Sunday. If you go tomorrow, it will probably be a streamer game and be careful wading. We'll keep our eyes on things and do an update here as we know.

Elliot Cantwell sent us this report from yesterday:

"I fished today from 11-6. Sulphers, flying ants, midges, small caddis and one March Brown. Fished mainly the midgesmid-day but fishing a size 14 mayfly as an indicator did bring a few fish to net. Most though were taken on the usual Hare's Ear nymph. Will be out tomorrow. Fingers crossed for a good Sulpher hatch. Water clarity improved greatly today."

Sulphers should be strong on the Clear Creek for a few weeks. Fish the evenings!!!

Thanks as always friends for the reports. We are now approaching 1,000 people per day that are reading this Blog and we all appreciate the feedback. Keep the reports and pics coming!!!!!

Erie Steelhead

Rains last night West and into Cleveland brought the Vermilion, Rocky and Chagrin up. The Grand, Ashtabula and Conneaut are all looking good though and should fish well this weekend.

Quite a few reports from anglers up that way this week and it's all Bronze....hardly any chrome at all. We did get a few pics of steelhead from folks but they weren't "Post Worthy". Pretty ugly.

We do believe that it's safe to say that steelhead season is over and smallmouth season is on! Should be good to excellent smallmouth fishing for at least a month or more here. Anybody interested in getting up there, let us know! We have gudes available who are as or more excited about smallmouth than steelhead.

We'll keep updating periodically and posting some pics of bronze, but probably seen the last of the "pink pics" for the season.
