Tying the EASIEST Fly In The World: The Mop Fly

Hey there, friends! If you're all about reeling in some big catches and adding some extra flair to your fly-fishing game, then you're in for a treat. I'm Ryan from Mad River Outfitters, and today, I'm about to let you in on a little secret – the 2-minute mop fly.

As someone who's spent countless hours at the vise, crafting flies, I'm excited to show you how to whip up this funky fly that's been raising eyebrows and reeling in fish like there's no tomorrow.

But before we dive into the nitty-gritty, let's talk about materials. Here's what you'll need: a trusty scud hook, size 8 (I've got the U202 on hand), a bead that matches in 3/16, mop chenille in your preferred color (today, I'm using light gray), and a touch of UV brown ice dub. And don't forget your secret weapon – a bit of superglue or Zap-A-Gap to keep everything secure.

Now, you might be wondering, what in the world is a mop fly? Well, it’s a fly that resembles something you might have snipped from your bathroom rug, but trust me, it's far more enticing to fish than it may look to you. This unconventional marvel can imitate a plethora of aquatic insects – from grub to crane fly larva to caddis. It's a versatile choice that's bound to tempt hungry fish, especially those on the lookout for a juicy bug-sized snack.

Alright, let's get to the fun part – tying the 2-minute mop fly. Don't worry if you're left-handed like me; this fly is so easy to craft that it practically ties itself. Secure your hook in the vise and slide on that bead – remember, small hole first. Then, wrap the hook shank with a matching thread and prep the mop material. A touch of Zappa Gap will give it that snug fit, and after a few wraps, it's mop time. Don't stress over perfection; this fly is all about that casual charm.

Wrap the mop around the hook shank, a couple of wraps to hold it in place, and trim the excess. No need for elaborate artistry here. Time for the thorax – grab some ice dub, double it onto your thread, and wrap it down. Work your way to the bead, secure it with a half hitch, and snip off the excess. Just like that, you've just whipped up a mop fly. The easiest fly to tie in the world!

So, whether you're an avid fly-tyer or just dipping your toes into the world of fishing, give the mop fly a shot. Tie up a bunch in various colors – it's all about the experiment.

If you're not feeling the crafty vibes, don't fret. You can snag some ready-made mop flies without breaking the bank right from Mad River Outfitters. Remember, this fly is your ticket to some exciting catches. If you want to see it all in action, check out the YouTube video we made here.

Unmatched Casting Performance

At the heart of the Blitz series lies TFO's patented and exclusive Axiom technology. The rods are constructed with high-modulus carbon fiber material, fortified with an embedded double-helix of Kevlar within the blank. This design results in a rod that stabilizes faster and smoother, absorbs shock more effectively, and can comfortably handle overloading. Designed for the Pursuit of Excellence

The Blitz fly rods are tailored to meet the demands of modern fly fishing scenarios. With a fast action and a mid-level of stiffness, these rods are perfectly suited for casting heavy lines and large flies at a distance. This makes them an ideal choice for anglers who prefer using long intermediate and sinking lines, as well as weighted flies. Whether you're chasing elusive prey or targeting fish that break the surface in a frenzy, the Blitz rods empower you to respond swiftly and accurately.

Aesthetically Stunning and Thoughtfully Crafted

The attention to detail that TFO has poured into the design of the Blitz rods is truly remarkable. Each model features premium-quality cork handles adorned with burl accents, creating a tactile and visually appealing grip. The fully anodized aluminum reel seats come with built-in hook keepers, adding convenience to the angler's experience.

For easy identification, the alignment dots are color-coded according to line weight, ensuring that you can quickly select the right rod for the job. The RECOIL guides by REC, coupled with ultra-lightweight chromium-impregnated stainless-steel snake guides, contribute to the rod's impeccable casting performance. With deep turquoise blanks, dark blue thread wraps, and silver tipping, the Blitz series exudes both elegance and functionality.

Never Get Underwraps on Your Fly Reel Again!

Howdy, friends! Today, let's talk about a nifty little trick that can save you some trouble on the water. You know that pesky habit of reeling your leader all the way up into your reel? Well, fear knot! We’ve got a simple solution for you.

The Problem and Its Consequences

Okay, picture this. You're wrapping up your fishing session, ready to put your reel away. But hold up! You’ve reeled your leader all the way in… Next time you get it out, you'll be in for a headache.

Trust us, we’ve been there. You'll have to go digging around to find that tippet end, wasting precious time and patience, upset that you cut your fingernails so short.

But that's not all. This bad habit can lead to underwraps, where your tippet and leader get tangled in the line. Untangling that mess is no fun, especially when you're out there chasing big game fish. So, let’s put that behind us with a simple fix.

Enter the OROS Strike Indicators

Now, folks, get ready to meet the gamechangers in the strike indicator world: the OROS Strike Indicators. These are flying off the shelves for a reason. And guess what?

They're not just for indicators anymore! We've discovered a fantastic second use for them, and it's about to make your life easier. Simply attach an OROS Indicator to the end of your tippet, and bam! No more reeling it all the way up into your reel. It's as simple as that!

When Brian is teaching fly fishing classes, you better believe that all our school rods are rocking these indicators to prevent underwraps and tippet getting tangled on the reel. They're just that good!

Here's a pro tip for your fishing trips: If you want to be prepared for the next day, rig up your rod, pass your tippet through the hook keeper or guide, and attach an OROS Strike Indicator. Come morning, you'll be ready to hit the water without a hitch. Just remove the indicator, tie on the fly, and off you go!

How The WOOLY BUGGER Became the Most Popular Fishing Fly!

Howdy, friends! Today, we're diving into the intriguing history of a fly that's been a staple in every angler's fly box — the Woolly Bugger. Remember that time we talked about the origins of this famous fly? Well, buckle up, because it seems I might've mixed in a little fiction with the facts. But don't worry, we're setting the record straight!

Contrary to my previous Eurasian Prince Tale, the Woolly Bugger's journey doesn't lead us to a regal figure. In fact, this beloved fly wasn't around since medieval times—it's a more recent invention. Circa 1967, or perhaps the early 1970s, a Pennsylvania fly tier named Russell Blessing stepped into the spotlight. He's the mind behind this ingenious creation, which has found its place in angler lore worldwide. Though the exact genesis is shrouded in mystery, what's clear is that the Woolly Bugger evolved from the Woolly Worm, itself a twist on the ancient British Palmer fly.

Now, let's talk about the iconic Bugger's classic design. Picture this: a Marabou tail, a flashy touch with some crystal or standard Chenille, and a palmered saddle hackle creating that irresistible movement underwater. The original, often in brown, was meant to imitate the dobson-fly larva, also known as a hellgrammite. However, today's Woolly Buggers have undergone an evolutionary explosion. They come in an array of hues, sizes, and even shapes, like the Sculpin Bugger and the Thin Mint.

Why does the Woolly Bugger hold such a special place in anglers' hearts? Lefty Kreh, a legendary figure in fly fishing, famously emphasized its significance. This versatile fly has stood the test of time, proving its worth in various scenarios. For Brian personally, if he had to pick one fly to fish with for the rest of his freshwater days, it would undoubtedly be a Woolly Bugger. Back in '92 during a trip to Yellowstone National Park, Brian put this fly to the test, and boy, did it deliver—more fish than he could count!

So, the real story of the Woolly Bugger is far from the prince-in-a-castle fantasy. It's a tale of innovation, evolution, and an angler's dedication to a fly that continues to prove its mettle. Want to grab a piece of this angling legacy for yourself? Check out the collection of Woolly Buggers at Mad River Outfitters, and consider supporting us as we keep sharing the joy of fishing. Like, subscribe, and get ready—more exciting fly fishing content is headed your way!

Ready to experience the magic of the Woolly Bugger firsthand? Make sure to add this iconic fly to your fly box. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting started, the Woolly Bugger's versatility and success rate make it a must-have in any fishing arsenal. Head over to Mad River Outfitters to explore our selection of Woolly Buggers and other fantastic flies. Your support keeps us going, allowing us to bring you more insightful fishing content.

How to Quickly Change Fly Lines

Today, we're going to address a common question: How do you swap out a fly line quickly?

Whether you're on the water or preparing for a fishing trip, changing fly lines doesn't have to be and shouldn’t be a hassle.

Let’s discuss the benefits of keeping the loop on the back end of your fly line and introduce a handy tool that simplifies line storage and swapping.

You might be wondering why fly lines come with a loop on the back end when we're often advised to cut off loops on the front end. The loop on the back end serves a crucial purpose when it comes to swapping fly lines.

It allows for easy attachment and detachment, making line changes a breeze. Instead of cutting off this loop, we recommend keeping it intact for added convenience.

To store and organize your fly lines effectively, we recommend using the Omnispool Switch Box. This handy tool comes with a crank and provides a convenient storage solution for your fly lines.

With this switch box, you can carry multiple fly lines with you on the boat or keep them neatly organized at home. It's a must-have accessory for fly anglers who frequently swap out lines.

Now, let's discuss how to quickly change fly lines using the Bimini Loop connection. This connection is especially useful when dealing with heavier lines or targeting larger fish species.

By creating a Bimini Loop in the backing, you can easily attach and detach fly lines without the need for complex knot tying. The Bimini Loop provides additional strength and durability, ensuring a reliable connection.

Changing fly lines doesn't have to be a tedious process. By keeping the loop on the back end of your fly line and utilizing the Bimini Loop connection, you can quickly swap out lines without compromising strength or reliability.

If you want to see a visual demonstration of this process and learn more about the Omnispool Switch Box, we highly recommend watching the full video on the Mad River Outfitters YouTube Channel. Don't forget to pick up an Omnispool Switch Box for convenient line storage and easy line changes on your next fishing adventure. Tight lines and happy fishing!
