Saturday Sessions: February

Saturday, February 10th

9:00 a.m.- Noon

with Ryan Ratliff

Steelhead has been a major topic at MRO from the beginning.  Some of the classic patterns that are used around the world either was conjured up through our guides or close friends of the shop.  Combine the classics with the diversity in presentation options today, fly patterns vary from small eggs and nymphs to tube and shank flies.

In this class we will warm up with basic egg and nymph pattern thoughts focusing on color theories for water conditions.  Swinging flies will be the main focus of the class though.  Shank and tube platforms will be covered.  Each student will be provided with an Aqua Tube Kit and other samples.  This “Saturday Session” will jump start your journey into tying your own steelhead flies.  Ryan Ratliff will share lessons learned over his many years fishing and guiding for steelhead.  Join us for this overview of the different types of flies needed to fill a well-stocked steelhead box for your next adventure

This class is for intermediate and advanced tyers. It will be held at the shop from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Participants will need to bring their vise and basic tools. All hooks and materials for the classes will be provided.

Brian's Sculpin #1 - As Seen on YouTube!

Howdy Friends, Brian Flechsig here! As stated in the video on this fly, I have been working the past year on getting my fly boxes organized. Quite the task but it is coming along.

I was recently working on my sculpin box and came up with a few new patterns that have worked well for me, so I thought I’d share them here.

I haven’t named any of them yet... So we are just calling this Sculpin #1. It is based on the Mike Lawson Wool Head Sculpin that we sold here in the shop for many years and was a staple. It is no longer available commercially so I had to figure out a way to tie it myself. Pretty similar, although my version of the fly rides hook up, where the original did not.

I tie this fly in both olive and brown. The Olive is patterned here but easy to change up the colors.

Here's the materials you'll need to tie your own:

Hook: Any 3X long streamer hook- used in this video is the Umpqua U Series U301 - Size 4

Thread: Ultra Thread 140 denier- olive or brown

Weight: .030 Lead Wire

Tail: Magnum Rabbit Strip

Underbelly: Olive Ice Dub

Body: Cross-Cut Rabbit Strip - Olive

Overbody/Hackle: Whiting Coq De Leon - Speckled Olive

Pectoral Fins: Whiting Coq De Leon- Speckled Olive (Can use most any appropriate Speckled or Grizzly Hen Saddle if you don’t have the Whiting product)

Head: Sculpin Wool - Olive

Finish: Loon UV Epoxy - Thin

Let's get started:

  1. Place the hook in the vise and start your thread as you normally would. Laying a base of thread along the hook. Wind up with the thread back at the front of the hook behind the eye.
