Lefty Kreh is one of the most influential figures in the history of fly fishing. While known for his innovations in casting techniques and fly design, his biggest contribution to the sport was his unwavering commitment to sharing knowledge and making the sport inclusive to anyone who cared to participate. His career began in the late 1940s, and over the decades, he played a key role in popularizing saltwater fly fishing. Lefty’s Deceiver, a fly pattern he developed in the 1950s, became one of the sport’s most widely used and celebrated flies, even earning a spot on a U.S. postage stamp in 1991. Beyond his technical contributions, Lefty was a gifted teacher, writer, and photographer. His infectious charisma, quick wit, and approachable, no-nonsense teaching style helped countless anglers improve their casting and fly-tying skills and exponentially grow the sport. Through books, magazine articles, and hands-on instruction, he made fly fishing more accessible to the general public, leaving an enduring legacy. His impact continues to shape the sport today as anglers worldwide apply his techniques and philosophy to their own fishing pursuits. The inaugural Tie Fest event occurred in 2005. It became Lefty Kreh’s Tiefest in 2014 after discussions with Lefty. With his blessing, Lefty Kreh’s Tiefest continued to grow, hosting tying demonstrations, workshops and clinics that helped galvanize the fly fishing community. In April 2025, the event returns in Lefty’s honor as we unite the sport’s legends with industry leaders and the community to share wisdom and inspire stewardship in the next generation
